Created by the Black Equity Collective in 2023, “Collective Conversations” is a fireside chat series spotlighting the role of Black leaders and nonprofit sector influencers in advancing a vision of Black permanency in California. Guests join BEC Founder and Chief Architect Kaci Patterson in an intimate conversation as they discuss the impacts of racial justice on movement building and nonprofit sustainability.

Fredrika Newton
The Black Equity Collective celebrated Black History Month with the third installment of Collective Conversations with featured guest, Fredrika Newton, widow of Black Panther Party co-founder, Huey Newton. On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Fredika Newton joined host Kaci Patterson for a candid conversation about the legacy of the Black Panther Party and what it takes to be a leader in movement building work.

Collective Conversations featuring Mayor Karen Bass
On Monday, April 8, Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass joined the Black Equity Collective (BEC) for their signature fireside chat event, Collective Conversations. Mayor Bass and BEC's Chief Architect, Kaci Patterson, discussed the Mayor's focus on tackling homelessness and ways her administration is partnering with nonprofit organizations across the City to move people off the streets and into permanent supportive housing. She also discussed her experience as a former nonprofit leader, and the role nonprofits play in solving pressing community issues.
Collective Conversations featuring Common
On Wednesday, December 7, 2023, BEC kicked off our Fireside Chat series, “Collective Conversations”, with artist and activist Common. The evening started with a conversation about the work Black-led organizations are doing across Southern California and moved into a one on one conversation with BEC’s Chief Architect Kaci Patterson and Common about the impact Black philanthropy has on social and racial justice.
